Join in the challenge! The Chinese standard of shouldering heavy responsibilities with courage
At present, domestic and foreign earthwork machinery manufacturing enterprises have gradually implemented sustainable development strategies, but there is still a lack of systematic research on sustainable development standards in the design, manufacturing, and recycling stages of the entire product life cycle, and a complete system of sustainable development standards for earthwork machinery has not been established, which limits the sustainable and healthy development of the earthwork machinery industry.

In 2020, the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Earthmoving Machinery (hereinafter referred to as the Committee) submitted a proposal report to the ISO/TC l27 Technical Committee for Earthmoving Machinery of the International Organization for Standardization for the establishment of the ISO/TC 127/SC5 Technical Committee for Sustainable Development. Nowadays, the establishment of the branch not only provides guidance and assistance for the sustainable future development direction of China and even the world’s earthwork machinery, but also reflects China’s responsibility and practice as a major manufacturing country when facing global sustainable development issues.
Tamp the foundation and build a platform! Chinese standards for seeking development
Research by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has shown that standards and product qualification assessments affect 80% of global investment and trade, and technical standards can promote economic globalization and investment facilitation. It can be said that standards are the technical basis for economic and social activities, playing an irreplaceable role in reducing trade costs, promoting technological innovation, and enhancing communication and mutual trust. Throughout the years, most of the global manufacturing industry standard revision work, including earthwork machinery, has been in the following stage in China.
In 2017, the two international standards ISO 10987-2: “Sustainability of Earthmoving Machinery Part 2: Remanufacturing” and ISO 10987-3: “Sustainability of Earthmoving Machinery Part 3: Second hand Machines”, which were drafted by the Standards Committee, were officially published and distributed. They established internationally recognized, scientifically reasonable, operable, and cost-effective technical specifications in the remanufacturing and second-hand machinery industries of earthmoving machinery. It can be foreseen that in the future, the branch will further promote the sustainable development standards of earthwork machinery, continue to build communication platforms through technical standards, intervene in international standard formulation and revision activities as soon as possible, grasp the discourse power of international standards, and use technical standards to go global, thereby driving the promotion and application of Chinese equipment, Chinese brands, Chinese technology, and Chinese services overseas. This will become an important model to strengthen the foundation and promote the sustainable and high-quality development of China’s equipment manufacturing industry.
Build a cohesive force! Gan Zuo is the Chinese standard for “engines”
The Secretariat of the Branch is undertaken by Jiangsu XCMG Engineering Machinery Research Institute Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as XCMG Research Institute), and is responsible for daily management and business guidance by the China Machinery Industry Federation.
As a leading enterprise in China’s construction machinery industry, XCMG has always attached great importance to standardization work. It has convened and participated in the formulation of 6 international standards, presided over and participated in the formulation of more than 200 national and industry standards, and the standard system covers more than 13000 standards at all levels. XCMG Research Institute has conducted in-depth research in areas such as green design, green manufacturing, remanufacturing, reuse, recycling, and full lifecycle assessment. It has led and participated in the formulation of 47 national standards and 19 industry standards for earthwork machinery, promoting the sustainable development and industrialization process of the earthwork machinery industry.
The branch secretariat is undertaken by XCMG Research Institute
As the responsible unit of the branch secretariat, XCMG Research Institute hopes to use its own efforts to collaborate with various groups in the earthwork machinery industry chain, unify the planning and management of standardization work for the sustainable development of earthwork machinery, promote the research and industrialization of key technologies for the sustainable development of earthwork machinery in China, and contribute “Chinese wisdom” on the road to aligning with international sustainable development standards.
I believe that in the process of closer cooperation between the branch and the International Standards Organization, and on the path of deeper integration and promotion with international sustainable development standards, the branch and its promotion of sustainable development technology standards for earthmoving machinery will not only greatly promote the healthy and sustainable development of China’s manufacturing industry, but also become the technological “engine” for global sustainable development of earthmoving machinery.
To lay a solid foundation for development and make sustainable accumulation a momentum! The establishment of the branch has sounded a new horn for the sustainable development of earthwork machinery, opening up a new journey of high-quality development in the industry. The future of sustainable development of earthwork machinery is promising.
