Caterpillar has signed an agreement with Canadian mining company Nouveau Monde Graphite Inc. to develop, test, and produce “zero emission machines” for the Matawinie graphite mining project in Saint Saint Michael, Quebec, Canada. The New World plan is to deploy a fleet of fully electric mining equipment before 2028.

Caterpillar will collaborate with the New World team to incorporate customer feedback throughout the development process and conduct testing of zero emission fleets and infrastructure before commercial production.

“The cooperation between Caterpillar and the New World marks an important milestone in the mining industry,” said Denise Johnson, President of Caterpillar Group, in a prepared statement. “By integrating technology, machines, and services, the entire Caterpillar team is proud to support the new world as they are committed to building and establishing their first zero emission mine.”

Founder of the New World Eric Desaulniers, President and CEO, stated in a statement: “We are proud to be a driving force for our peers, striving to electrifie our business to fulfill our commitment to carbon neutrality while maintaining the productivity and efficiency standards of our mining business.
